The first Earth Day was in 1970, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, people continue to lead with groundbreaking ideas and by the power of example. Earth Day is here and it is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. and Managing Director of the White House Council of Environmental Quality Christy Goldfuss will announce Friday, April 22, at 2 p.m. ET the 2016 U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools, District Sustainability Awardees, and Postsecondary Sustainability Awardees. The announcement will be made on the Department’s YouTube channel.
Forty-seven schools, 15 school districts and 11 postsecondary institutions will be honored this year. The honorees are being recognized for reducing their environmental impact, including energy use, waste, transportation, and water; creating healthy learning environments and fostering wellness practices; and providing effective sustainability education that prepares students to succeed in the 21st century.

Only half of American adults get enough physical activity to reduce the risk of chronic disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Walking is an easy way to start and maintain a physically active lifestyle.
